Travel and Accommodation

Parking: There is no parking available on campus.  Paid parking is available on the surrounding streets.

Directions to Merchiston Campus, Colinton Road

Please see the following link for a street map with directions to Merchiston Campus, including buses from the city centre:

The map contains a link to Google maps, including the ‘Directions’ option which allows you to get directions from any other location in the city.

The campus is close to ‘Holy Corner’ (corner of Colinton Road and Morningside Road) where most buses stop. Bus drivers will be able to help you get off at the right stop. From the bus stop, coming from the city centre, you need to walk a few steps further ahead, then cross the junction at the traffic light, and take the street on the other side (Colinton Road), past the Bank of Scotland, Tesco’s, and Starbucks. Once you arrive at campus, walk straight ahead underneath the building, through the main entrance. The conference will be signposted, and there will be a conference registration desk in the foyer. The main university reception desk is to the right if you have any questions.

For travel within the city centre, you can purchase a single bus ticket from the driver (£1.70) or a day ticket (£4.00) – direct change only! Transport for Edinburgh (which includes buses and trams) have a smartphone app which allows you to purchase electronic tickets. This is a convenient option if you are short on change or are planning on frequent bus/tram use during your stay

From the Airport

An easy, comfortable and affordable option of travelling between airport and city centre is the Airlink Bus. Tickets are £4.50 single or £7.50 return. You can buy the tickets from a little kiosk in front of the bus station at the airport, or from the driver. Airlink Buses leave very frequently during the day, about every 10 minutes or so, and will make several stops on the way to the city centre. The best stop for the conference venue (and most of the hotels and B&Bs close to the venue) is Haymarket Station, although it’s still a 20-minute walk (which you probably don’t want to do with luggage, but there are always taxis waiting near the Haymarket stop: approx. £8-10 for a taxi from Haymarket to campus). Travel time from the airport should be about 20 minutes, depending on traffic (c. 30 minutes into Edinburgh city centre). The Airlink Bus will continue into the city centre and stop close to Waverley Station. For more info, see

Edinburgh also has a tram which takes you from the city centre, via Haymarket, to the airport. For more, see

Please note that for trams, you have to purchase your ticket via a vending machine. You cannot board without purchasing your ticket first.

From the Train Stations

There are two mainline train stations, Haymarket and Waverley. Haymarket is slightly more convenient for the conference venue, as it is closer and less hectic than Waverley. While walking from Waverley would take a little bit, you get spectacular views of the city the moment you emerge from the train station, overlooking Princes Street Gardens and the Castle. From Waverley, you can also take the Princes Street exit and catch a bus towards the venue (11, 15, 16 from Princes Street or 23 from The Mound or Hanover Street, just off Princes Street).

There is no shortage of accommodation in Edinburgh. Below you will find a range of choices to suit all budgets. Please note that we have not inspected all these places; they have been chosen because they are conveniently located for the conference venue in South Edinburgh. Some of the hotel chains listed here are in the city centre and a bit further away from the venue, but Edinburgh is a compact city and you could either walk to the venue or take a bus or taxi.

To find out the exact location of the accommodation in relation to the conference venue, you may like to use the ‘Get directions’ facility in Google Maps ( the addresses for each hotel/guest house are listed below, so type that into ‘A’ and type ‘Holy Corner’ as your destination ‘B’ (Edinburgh Napier University’s Merchiston Campus, where the conference will take place, is at 10 Colinton Road, a few minutes by foot from what is known as ‘Holy Corner’. There are frequent bus services from the city centre that stop at Holy Corner)
